How To Use Our Spiritual Baths

Updated: Oct 31

Spiritual baths have been around since the beginning of time, long before biblical narratives took shape. They trace their roots back to African spirituality, which laid the groundwork for various practices that have evolved over the centuries. From Hoodoo to Judaism, Voodoo, Lukumi, Santería, and many more, spiritual baths have remained an essential aspect of spirituality. They serve purposes such as cleansing, beckoning, healing, and removing obstacles.

First... What is a Spiritual Bath? Rivers, lakes, and oceans have historically been used for cleansing, offerings, and healing within spiritual communities. Baptisms, initiation rites, and ceremonies of union all emphasize the need for a spiritual bath. Before embarking on any spiritual work, whether for yourself or others; cleansing is paramount.

The key to conducting a spiritual bath lies in understanding that it’s not merely the water or the herbs that do the work. It’s the Spirits behind each herb, every drop of water, and every oil and prayer. Everything matters. The herbs and waters act as agents of the Spirit, guiding how the work unfolds. They embody the power behind any non-physical or spiritual endeavor.

A spiritual bath is a ritual, a sacred practice that connects you with your Divine Being. When I say ritual, I mean it in the truest sense. It’s a repeated action, much like a heartbeat. Just because you performed it last time doesn’t mean you can skip it this time. Engaging in the ritual of cleansing prepares you for the work ahead. It consecrates your vessel.

Think of it this way: just as you would clean your meat or vegetables before cooking, you must cleanse before blessing, healing, or sending energy. You prepare your hands, heart, and mind for the journey ahead. The spiritual baths available here are powerful because the Spirits behind the herbs, salts, and waters have touched them. We honor the Spirits that oversee our actions, enrich our offerings, and guide what we share with those who seek it.

Before you immerse yourself in a spiritual bath, there are several important steps to take:

Honor the Ancestors and Spirits overseeing your work.

Express gratitude for the water, herbs, oils, and other materials. Give thanks!

Greet the Spirits before you begin. This prepares the space for their presence. No one enjoys doing something for someone who lacks gratitude. Remember to show respect to the Spirits, as the bath itself embodies faith in their power to cleanse you for your intended work.

Steps for All Spiritual Baths.

1. Greet and honor your Ancestors and/or Divine Being overseeing your work.

2. Greet and honor the agents of the Spirit—the herbs, salts, waters, and oils. Speak to them. Acknowledge their presence. Invite them into your work. Pour your items into the prepared water. "In the name of the Father, Mother, and Child. The Divinity of the 3, I, (name), invoke (place intent here).

You can either drop the mullein bag in your bath, hang it over your bathtubs spout, or open the bag and sprinkle the herbs and salts within the bath. Choose what feels right for you. The first two options are easier to clean up.

Say the invocation three times. Each time you speak your intent, pour the water over your head. Let it flow from crown to sole. Feel the shift within you. When the bath is complete, dispose of a portion of the water at the base of a tree. Don’t forget to honor and thank the tree as well. Leave a small offering if you feel called. This is part of the exchange.
