Understanding Kwanzaa
Kwanzaa, which means "first fruits" in Swahili, originated in the United States in 1966. It was created by Dr. Maulana Karenga to honor African heritage and culture while promoting community values. Celebrated from December 26th to January 1st, each of the seven days focuses on one of the Nguzo Saba (Seven Principles), providing a framework for reflection and action:
- Umoja (Unity): Striving for and maintaining unity in the family, community, nation, and race.
- Kujichagulia (Self-Determination): Defining ourselves, naming ourselves, creating for ourselves, and speaking for ourselves.
- Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility): Building and maintaining our community together and solving problems as a group.
- Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics): Supporting our own businesses and sharing economic resources to uplift the community.
- Nia (Purpose): Committing to collective vocation and the development of our community to restore its greatness.
- Kuumba (Creativity): Doing as much as we can to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it.
- Imani (Faith): Believing in our people, our parents, our teachers, our leaders, and the righteousness of our struggle.
